Additionally, major hardware stores such as Home Depot will cut and thread pipe to you so you do not need any special tools. All you need is a decent looking, right 2 x 8 board to use for the shelf.
After determining where you need to set the plate, drill holes in the drywall and add drywall anchors. If you wish to put heavy things on the shelf when you go to purchase your anchors choose the ones that are rated for more weight, or attach the shelf to studs.
Then take the 1/2 inch (inside diameter) steel pipe and with a 1-inch spade bit, drill holes through the board. The plate is held in place by setting the board between a coupler and an elbow.
After all of the piping is attached, then prop up the shelf with spare boards as you screw it to the wall.
Now you’ve got a fine, sturdy shelf which looks perfect and can easily be added on to if more storage is needed. And you did not even have to break a sweat.
